Selected as the 2001-2002 Veteran's of Foreign War Teacher of the Year for the State of Washington, the 2001-2002 Veteran's of Foreign War National Citizenship Education Teacher Award, Bryan has taught for 23 years in public schools in the State of Washington. Bryan is a nationally respected motivational speaker, having spoken to over 150 schools, organizations, and businesses over the past 12 years. He talks to business leaders, civic leaders, athletes, parents and school children about making good choices and striving to be the best. He describes the 5 characteristics of a champion and how to apply those in ones life.
He is a popular clinician at various track and field clinics around the country, asked back year after year by his fellow coaches. He serves as director for the PEMCO Track and Field Clinic in Seattle, Washington. Bryan was selected by the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Committee to carry the Olympic torch in Olympia, WA on January 23, 2002 as well as lighting the cauldron and speaking on behalf of all the torch bearers.
Olympia area school district selected Bryan for outstanding service and recognition for the first semester of the 2001-2002 school year. Bryan is a member of the NCAA Speakers Bureau. He was a featured speaker at Boise State University and the University of Arkansas. His presentation, "Circle of Champions" will change your life, as will the book he authored under the same name. He has also produced two videos for track and field coaches and athletes called, "Speed to Win and the Ultimate Sprint, hurdle, relay and conditioning video!" As well Bryan has announced Track and Field clinics around the country.
Bryan is a highly respected in track and field. He is the recipient of the 1997 Pacific Northwest Track and Field "Contributor of the Year" award.
He is the Past-President of the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association, the current Washington State High School Representative for USATF, a USATF Level 1 Instructor, instructing at 20+ schools, and USATF Level II Coach specializing in sprints, hurdles and relays. He has also co-directed 2 Level 2 track and field coaching schools. He is a nationally certified official. Coaching the sprints, hurdles and relays, his athletes have amassed 25 state championships, two state titles and 10 top 4 state placers in just 9 years.
In August of 2002, Bryan was named Program Director for the USA Paralympic Track and Field Performance Coaching Staff. In the summer of 2000, Bryan served as Assistant Manager for the World Junior Track and Field Team. Twice he was selected as Co-Trip Coordinator and assistant coach for the USATF Cultural Track and Field Trips to Hong Kong and China.
In 2002 Bryan was selected as Program Director for the USA Paralympic Track and Field Team. In 2004 he was selected head coach for the 2004 USA Paralympic Track and Field Team for Athens, Greece.
In the early 1980's, Bryan took over a middle school track program of 48 students and built the program to over 300 student/athletes in just 3 years.
He coached Gabe Garrett, the 1995 National High School Decathlon Champion (7,407 points). He also coached Tony Volpentest, the 1996 Paralympic 100m and 200m champion and was paid for his services by H. Ross Perot for coaching Tony. He has also coached Marlon Shirley, triple world record holder, the world's fastest amputee and the 2000 Paralympic 100 meter Champion from Sydney Australia . Currently he is coaching Jeff Skiba, the amputee world record holder in high jump at 6' 11".
