Predicting performance Potential for Sprinters
Overview of Performance Prediction
1. What makes a sprinter? 2. Speed testing methods 3. How to determine the 30 fly time 4. Predicting 100m - 200m - 400m performance potiental 5. Tests for Power and Strength and what they tell us. 6. Predict this athletes potential. 7. How would you train this athlete?
What makes a sprinter: 1. Speed Stride length Stride Rate (frequency) 2. Strength 3. Power 4. Core Strength
Speed testing methods: Athletes: 2 efforts use best time - performance in spikes - with wind
X 20 m Acceleration zone X 30 meter timing zone X
Speed Performance Predictions 30 meter fly test for max Velocity Methods: 1. Speed trap (photo light sensors) 2. Video tape ( 1 frame = 1/30th of a second) Set up camera, so you can see both cones without panning the camera Record athlete, count the total number of frames from in to and out of the 30meter zone. Divide the number of frames by 30. Exp: 108/30 = 3.60 seconds 3. Handed time (stopwatch) stand far enough back where you can see the torso of the body cross between the cones on both in and out zones. Record time and add .18 seconds for reaction time to adjust for photocell Timing or video taping differences.
30 Meter fly time
3.60 seconds step 1: Record the athletes fastest effort step 2: subtract competitive factor = .12 gives a performance time of 3.48 sec.
Step 3: Calculate Average velocity
Velocity = Distance / Time Velocity = 30 meters / 3.48 sec. = 8.62 m/s
100 meter Dash Prediction:
Step 1: Calculate time = distance / Velocity Time = 100 meters / 8.62 m/s = 11.60 Step 2: Add the acceleration factor Time = 11.60 + 1.1 = 12.70 seconds Athletes performance predictor for 100 meters is 12.70 (handed timed) Convert to FAT by adding reaction time (18 seconds is average) FAT time = 12.88 seconds
200 meter Dash Prediction:
Step 1: Calculate 100 meter average Velocity Velocity = distance / time 100 meter velocity = 100m/ 12.7s = 7.87 m/s Step 2: multiply 100m velocity by 98.3% 7.87m/s X .983 = 7.74 m/s - this is the 200meter velocity Step 3: Time = Distance / Velocity 200 meter time = 200m / 7.74 m/s = 25.84 sec (hand timed) FAT = 25.84 + .18 = 26.02 seconds
400 meter Dash Prediction: Step 1: 200m Velocity X 90% = 400m Velocity 7.74m/s X .90 = 6.97m/s (400m Velocity) Step 2: Calculate 400 meter Time Time = Distance / Velocity 400 meter time = 400m / 6.97 m/s = 57.39 sec. FAT = 57.39 + .18 = 57.57 seconds
